Guest guest
Hello! I'm new to the group, and relatively new to raw. I've been researching raw and preparing raw food since mid-January of 06, but I've gone back and forth to some cooked food. I was a strict vegan for years and years, then started incorporating some organic cheeses and even a little fish until trying to go raw this year. I've been 100% raw now since mid-May. So, my question is about oats. I've tried the soaked oat groats and for the most part they are pretty good. However, I've noticed a slightly bitter taste to them. Any ideas on what causes that and how to prevent it? I put in the " oatmeal " that I make cinnamon & cloves, raisins, walnuts, dates, figs, and a tiny bit of agave. I try not to eat too much sugary food, and I don't do honey. Then I tried making oatmeal cookies with that same recipe, but they came out a little bitter, too. (I might add that it didn't stop me from eating them!!) Does anyone have a great oatmeal cookie recipe? What about the bitterness that I am experiencing with the oat groats? Thanks! Guest guest
Try cutting back on the clove (or leave it out altogether) and adding a pinch of salt. -Mike --- melanieburtis <melanieburtis wrote: > Hello! Guest guest
Melanie, _usually_ bitter is associated with toxic. Personally, I don't eat any grains except on the rare occasion that I'll have some fresh sweet corn. I have a really good " oatmeal " recipe but it's not really oatmeal. Mash up a ripe banana or two, mix in some soaked raisins and enjoy. It's a good combination. Leave off the nuts, though, and have them with a meal that doesn't incorporate avocados, sweets, or starches. Someone else might have something that would pass for an oatmeal cookie. Sorry, I can't help you there. Tommie http://www.rawburchard.blogspot.com rawfood , " melanieburtis " <melanieburtis wrote: > > Hello! I'm new to the group, and relatively new to raw. Guest guest
Tommie - Thanks for the info. I had actually seen your post regarding your " oatmeal " from a couple months ago. I wouldn't eat that because I think it's too sugary. Especially without the nuts. Why did you say leave off the nuts? Why don't you eat any grains? I'm thinking now the taste of the oats is less bitter, more sour. I wonder if I soaked the groats too long. The cookies are actually pretty good, except for this slightly off taste that I can't eliminate, even with a ton of cinnamon and cloves. Guest guest
To the mashed bananas and raisins I add chopped apples, cinnamon and chopped walnuts. My grandkids love it. I know the walnuts are not a good combination, but so much better than milk and boxed sugary cereals. Sharon In our hearts we plan our day, but it is God who determines our steps. Guest guest
I like mashed bananas and raisins that I have soaked overnight. Adding walnuts makes it sound even more delicious. Can you please tell me why this is not a good combination? Stacey vegigran wrote: To the mashed bananas and raisins I add chopped apples, cinnamon and chopped walnuts. My grandkids love it. Guest guest
Melanie, The " oatmeal " is very nourishing and the sugar is well utilized by the body since it's in its natural state. The nuts are fatty which doesn't combine well with the sugar in the fruit. It will cause fermentation. I don't eat grains because they aren't easily digested raw, even if they are sprouted. If something doesn't taste good, it's usually Mother Nature's way of telling us it isn't supposed to be eaten. Hope this helps!
