Guest guest
I am a little upset with my dehydrator! Our garden has gone into over time with strawberry production. I made 4 trays of strawberry leather, and started the dehydrator. The top tray turned out perfectly as always. The other three trays? Molded! Disgusting gooey mold. I have a Ronco (?) with out tel-flex sheets, so normally I line the trays with plastic wrap. Every time I do it, I wonder how the air will circulate very well with the little holes in the trays covered. The answer is, it doesn't. This was the first time I tried to do more than 2 trays at a time, so I learned my lesson the hard way! It just chaps my hide to waste so many pounds of strawberries to a lesson like that! It usually takes 4 pounds to make 2 trays....... So, to anyone that owns a Ronco or similar style dehydrator don't cover all 4 trays with plastic wrap at the same time or you will stop the air movement. Guest guest
Ive had good luck using parchment paper instead of plastic wrap....its not expensive and seems to work pretty well.... or...you can go on ebay and buy more of the plastic sheets and you should have better luck... Guest guest
Ouch, Leah! That hurt! I have a Harvest Savor by VitaMix that has the round trays but they have square sheets to use for leather. That leaves room for air to move around all four sides. If you do have to use plastic wrap, don't completely cover the trays and you should be okay. Guest guest
I experimented a little and found that the plastic grids from Michael's or any craft store work well, because you can cut them to size. They come in rectangular sheets and are less than a dollar each. My dehydrator is round so I had to cut round ones with a hole in the middle. The smaller the weave, the better. It's the stuff you make baskets and boxes out of by using yarn to make designs and connect them - know what I mean? I'm not sure how else to describe them. ~Sheri
Guest guest
Sheri, Are you talking about plastic canvas? I would never have thought to try plastic canvas in the dehydrator.
