I've been waiting to purchase my first durian, and now that they are in

season, I'm going to get one tomorrow! I have two friends and their kids

coming over Monday (3 adults and 11 kids) to try it since there should be

plenty to go around. I don't know if I really have a questions, but what's

everyone's opinion about durian? I know they're supposed to " taste like

heaven, smell like hell " . LOL! Is there a particular way you're supposed to

open one? How do I know if the one I'm purchasing is fully ripe or not? Any

great web sites on durians? I'm sure the one I'll be buying will be frozen,

but I think that's the only option unless I spend a fortune and order one

online.

I'll let you know what we all think of it! :)

It will take at least two days to thaw if left outside. I can usually open

mine by carefully putting my fingers in one of the indentations that should

be obvious and then pry it open. Sometimes a knife is called for, but not

usually if it is ripe.

Just be prepared for a love/hate relationship!

Try the Asian markets. If you don't want to make the rounds, look them

up and call them. Like someone said, it will probably be frozen. It

only takes mine a day to thaw vs the two days that was mentioned. That

is sitting on the counter in its mesh bag.

I'm going to purchase mine at an Asian market.

I have heard that all durians in the US *have* to be frozen, but I'm

wondering if they thaw them before we buy them, because I remember them

sitting out not refrigerated in this particular store. ??? I guess I'll find

out soon!

If a durian is in a mesh bag, it's been frozen. The only fresh durian I

have eaten I bought in Chinatown of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Luckily I can ride the train and eat a fresh durian and still get home in

time for dinner!

The other fresh I got was through the internet. It was my Christmas present

to myself. A friend and I sat in our freezing cold carport on Christmas Eve

and ate durian til we could not get another piece in our face! Boy were we

happy!!! It was expensive, but hey! I'm worth it.

Of course you're worth it! I may count my pennies and see if I have

enough to order some fresh.

I took some to work one day and about got ridden out of town on a

rail. I don't think it smells bad. I like the smell but some people

think it's like dirty gym socks magnified. One of the nurses is

Filipino and she calls it a fruity smell.

Are the seeds edible? I read that they are carcinogenic and I read

that they are good to eat. Since I didn't know which direction to go,

I threw them away.

Yep, the people on the subway were giving me very strange looks. I was alone

and went to a park to sit and eat it. Several folks were eyeballing me and I

offered them a taste with no takers. Finally one girl said " sure " and her

father thought she was nuts. After the bite I asked her (she was in her 20's)

what she thought. She said, " don't know I have allergies and I'm all stuffy and

can't smell or taste a thing " !!!

That's one reason I've never tried to drive to Canada and bring one back in the

car. They would probably think it was some sort of chemical warfare device.

Cindy - we got one and I just blogged it.

It cost me $5.00. It was loaded with pockets of great pillow sweetness.

Tel everyone it's " vanilla pudding " and hopefully they will love it.

But Jacob didn't!

Hmm... I just bought my first durian today. It is sitting on my counter

waiting to thaw. I've hunted all over Louisville to find a place that

carries them and I finally did!!!!! I can hardly wait to try it..

stink and all *lol* I'm curious as to what my parrots will think of

it. They eat what I do, except avacado, so I'll have to give them some!

Ok, so with all this " talk " of durians lately, my curiosity got the

better of me. I drove 20 miles to get one, brought it home, and

cracked it open. I have to say, I will not be getting another one.

The only one who liked it was my 7 month old daughter. I could not

handle the onion taste, and neither could my boys. When I want a

sweet treat, this will not be it. I think I'll stick with the frozen

whipped bananas.
