Guest guest
Oh my word! It is definitely the *strangest* whole/raw food I've ever had! It almost tasted like a raw vegan *recipe* for pudding or something (I rarely do recipes). It was sweet but also had a garlicky taste like several people had mentioned. One of our taste testers said it had a hint of onion in the end. It definitely had a natural gas smell. LOL! I was expecting to be overwhelmed with it though. It really didn't hit me too hard, BUT after I went outside for a couple of minutes and came back in....WHOA! That's when the smell really hit me! Our house still smells! I can't wait until dh gets home. I'm not going to warn him, I'm going to get his genuine reaction. LOL! I had planned to open it outside, but at the last minute decided " what the hey " and opened it inside. I won't be doing that again! Judy, I love your description.... " loaded with pockets of great pillow sweetness. " Great way of describing what it looked like! And it does look like vanilla pudding! There was a lot more meat in it than I expected too. I think I'm going to use the rest and make Durian Vice Cream. So, here's the verdict: My friend's 18-month-old twins loved it and kept coming back for more, my 19-month-old spit it out the second it touched his tongue and then laughed, her girls both liked it, her 10yo was eager to taste it and give his opinion but he didn't like it much, both of my other kids tasted it but weren't crazy over it, my friend was glad she tried it and didn't *hate* it but will probably not have it again (she thought she could probably get used to the taste though), and I pretty much agreed with her opinion. I wasn't crazy over it, but I think it's because it is so different than anything I've ever had before! I wasn't crazy over the first bite, but I ate a little more anyway. The second bite was a little better, and the 3rd bite actually tasted kinda good, so I think I could easily get used to it. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had blended it a food processor first to get the consistency the same throughout. Another friend came over for a few minutes and tried some. She didn't really like it, but she thought it was perhaps a bit over ripe. I told her that from everything I've heard about the fruit, it sounded perfect to me. Oh, and the lady at the checkout at the Asian market asked me if I had ever tried one before, so we got into a long discussion about it and she wished me luck. LOL! She said she actually likes the frozen ones better. She had gone to Vietnam last year and had fresh durian, but she didn't like the taste of them. I think it may actually be a different variety (?), so maybe that's why. I also wanted to mention that it was really surprisingly easy to open. I thought it was going to be hard, but I just cut a little in it and then took my fingers and ripped it apart. It was very simple and not messy at all. We'll see how the Vice Cream turns out, but at this moment I don't really see myself buying one again anytime in the near future. I'm definitely glad for the experience though. It was a very *interesting* experience! Cindy -- Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.0/368 - Release 6/16/2006
Guest guest
There are a couple hundred varieties of durian. And I agree with the woman in the store, I don't like the fresh as well as the frozen. I think the fresh is more watery and not so creamy as the frozen. I'm drooling. Tomorrow is the last day of school. Think I'll take mine out of the freezer. My local Asian market carries the whole durian as well as cleaned durian. It is out of the shell and vacuum sealed and then frozen. It is very tasty and comes in an amount one person can devour if they really want to or two people can enjoy themselves very well. Guest guest
All this talk about Durians makes me really want to try one, do all of the Durians taste the same? or are there different types? Renata
Guest guest
One other thing I forgot to mention about the durian.... When dh got home yesterday, the first thing he said when he walked in the door was, " What's that gas smell?
