Guest guest
I am not a chef, but the family cook. :-) And I can see why it would be hard for a chef to stay raw. This week-end I roasted a ham for my family and guests, after the meal I was cleaning up the left overs and caught myself almost put a piece of ham in my mouth. I wasn't hungry, it was a very reflexive action that was little shocking. Thankfully, I realized it and stopped before it got into my mouth. Obviously, I tend to nibble when I am cooking. The solution I have come up with is, that when I am cooking their meals I keep carrot sticks ready and on the counter. This way I can nibble while I work and stay raw. Guest guest
Leah - we were speaking of raw chefs. I don't even want to think about having to cook, let alone meat! Luckily my kids (22 & 23) have never had meat (that I know of) and my husband is 90% raw. I work in the home ec department at school and I have to set out the raw materials for the kids projects. Last year was really hard on me and I slipped all the way to tasting a piece of ham! Albeit it was a small piece, but still I can see how being around that food is dangerous. Hopefully this year I will have a better grip on it and handle things better. Both my teachers retired and maybe, just maybe younger thinkers will replace them. The cooking teaching knew what I did (she has been to raw potlucks at my house) and refused to even discuss a vegetarian lab, not even cooked! And there are a great many ethnic groups in our school and a lot of their religions demand vegetarianism. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Shower time, finally - Shari
Guest guest
I know we were talking about raw chefs, but my point was how quickly and easily you can pop a piece of food into your mouth without thinking, especially when cooking (uncooking). I think it is very exciting to see how many young people are interested in a vegetarian way of life. My parents told me about 2 weeks ago that my youngest step sister had just recently changed to vegetarian. She is 16, and she has done all the research herself. She has a plan to transition from vegetarian to vegan. (I hope that raw will be a natural progression for her, but I am not pushing.) The wonderful benefit to her changes is #1 the rest of the family still living at home will be gradually introduced to vegan #2 I don't be the only nut in the tree come the next family holiday!!!!! Safety in numbers! I think the home ec department would be surprised to see how receptive the students probably already are. Hopefully, as you said the new teachers will be more open to vegetarian labs. 30 years from now, raw will be so much more mainstream maybe it will be a routine lab. For my own sanity, I hope it becomes mainstream a lot sooner! Leah SV <shavig wrote: Leah - we were speaking of raw chefs. I don't even want to think about having to cook, let alone meat!
