Dear Louise,

Victoria is out of the office currently, researching and writing new books.

I am maintaining her emails, and I can offer an answer to your question

regarding wild edibles.

It seems that all greens (“true lettuces†included) contain trace amounts of

alkaloids, which are poisons. Our bodies can handle these in small doses,

but eating massive amounts of any green causes these alkaloids to add up. This

is why we encourage rotating greens as much as possible. For more on this,

see pp 100-103 in Green For Life.

I hope that this information is helpful to you.

Sincerely,

Chris @ Raw Family

lambquaters and other greens - question

I know you recommend wild greens and your family thrives on them it seems. I

have been eating more and feel better.

Someone wrote this in a list I belong to:

" imho one should watch consumption of greens like lambsquarters, beet

greens, chard, bok choy, mustards and spinach that leave a certain

acidic aftertaste in the mouth due to the oxalic and other acids, I

think it is better to focus on true lettuces, kales, cabbage, collard,

kohlrabi, dandelions, plantain, sprouts and use the above mentioned

greens more sparingly "

How would you respond to it. I trust your judgement. I'm not sure what

those " acids " do to the body and would they be toxic or are people just not used

to some of the bitter taste because our lettuce has been changed so much.

Thank you for your consideration.

Louise Lin

ps - I have 3 of your books
