I have read that packaged salad has undergone a " chlorinated wash " but not the ones that say organic on them. _____ Yes, I understand that very few people know what is in the federal organic standard, nor what the USDA does with that standard. Many farmers have interpreted certain regulations as a MANDATE that they add a small amount of chlorine to their wash water for greens. Don't know whether you recall, but a short time after the federal standard went into effect, there was a big to-do involving Whole Foods and various growers of organic sunflower sprouts. The USDA decided to take aim at these sprouts and initiated a chlorination requirement. Whole Foods responded by eliminating organic sunflower sprouts from the product line, at least here in California, I believe on a corporate basis. Sorry to be the bearer of " bad " news. Guest guest
My mother got me into the habit of having a few 'window box' type tubs of lettuce growing near the kitchen at all times. Even though I just have a balcony, I have pots of various greens and herbs. You have to keep quite a lot of pots if you eat as many greens as I do, but at least you know it's organic and clean. And cheap! --- SV <shavig wrote: > Normally I only buy organic, but today I was > shopping in a different store (we were told gas is > going over $4.00 by the end of the week in the > Pacific Northwest, so I'm getting it done now!). Guest guest
Not to be " splitting hairs " , but there are varying degrees of the word organic. Organic can mean (as we are using here) free of chemical treatment, but it can also mean used in an unaltered state and thus interpreted as being good for us. Marijuana is organic, but there is controversy about whether or not it is actually good/healthy for us. Dog poop is organic (especially if the dogs are on a chemical-free, vegan diet) but that doesn't mean I'll be smearing it on my sandwich anytime soon. As I recall there was a good deal of controversy over the use of the term organic on packaging and what exactly had to certifiably occur for it's proper labeling use. I didn't follow it far enough except to make my own decision to not give too much credence to that term and look more at the production methods and investigate the companies instead. Nothing is EVER easy, eh? <smile> Kendra ________________________________ rawfood [rawfood ] On Behalf Of Elaine Bruce Wednesday, August 09, 2006 3:44 AM rawfood Re: [Raw Food] Packaged salads??? Guest guest
That's a great idea that I would use if I didn't have a cat! Can't you see her loving her new " digs " ? I have sworn off packaged salads since the last several I've bought were beginning to rot in the middle. There was a suggestion on BES to " package " our own salads. Wash the greens, prepare them, and keep them in the fridge in a container until they're needed. I haven't done this yet because I like to fix mine and then eat them right away but it _would_ be handy. Guest guest
Hmmm... maybe you could try it with thin long boxes that the cat couldn't comfortably dig in? My mother has a cat, and the only problem she has is that sometimes he gets a taste for baby lettuce leaves and has a nibble! --- Tommie <jerushy wrote: > That's a great idea that I would use if I didn't > have a cat!
