Guest guest
Calla, Welcome. I am still fairly new to the raw lifestyle, and I have found this list to be a great wealth of knowledge and support. I have a similar situation to the one you described, I still have to feed a son and a husband who thinks every meal must contain a meat product. I couldn't tell from your post if you have already started the transition or if you are getting ready to start. Either way my suggestions are going to be generally along the same lines. I came to this lifestyle from SAD, and used steamed veggies alot during the beginning transition. In the beginning my day started with fruit. Usually a banana that I could eat during the drive to work. At 10 am I would eat a snack of fruit, usually an apple or an orange. If I was hungry enough at any of these times, I would eat another fruit. My lunches were either a salad, or mashed avocado with raw corn chips that I made. My afternoon snack was more fruit, usually the apple or orange that didn't get eaten during the morning snack. Dinner was and still is my biggest challenge. I prepared a normal SAD meal for my family, but always included a side dish of steamed veggies. (HUGE side dish) For myself, I prepared another salad and ate the steamed veggies too. Making the larger veggie side dish did two things, it made my life less complicated by having to prepare less and it also got my family eating alot more veggies then they were. I over time I reduced the number of times per week I ate steamed veggies and increased the number of raw salads and veggies I am eating. My over all day is still very much the same, fruit for breakfast and the two snacks. Today my lunch was a huge plate of sliced tomatoes and cucumbers. Some days lunch is a whole cantaloupe, a watermelon or a pineapple. Time is short for me during the week, so I keep my uncooking more complicated recipes for the week-end. My two favorite recipes are raw corn chips/crackers and cashew cheese. Both are located in the files / recipe section of this group. The cashew cheese is under nut cheeses or pates, and was posted by Tommie (jerushy). The Corn chips / crackers are the ones posted by Melonie (I think) and were corn, yellow bell pepper, garlic powder, onion powder puree then dehydrated. If you are interested in either and don't find it in the files , let me know and I will email you more specific instructions. I will be completely honest, my will power issues are entirely around the time I spend cooking for my family. Habits are very hard to break when you are handling the temptations! I keep carrots or other raw veggies on the counter while I am cooking so that I can be sure any mindless nibbling is on a raw food. The lessons that have left the biggest impressions on me are the times that I gave into the craving for cooked food and made bad choices. I just had to have McDonald's one Sunday night, and was extremely sick all night and half the next day. Now, when I think of the golden arches, I have a vivid memory of spending the night in the bathroom and can say " No " so much easier now. Learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward, I think it gets easier every day. Leah Calla Canaday <ccan2k wrote: Hi Everyone, I am relatively new to this list. I have just been lurking and learning what I can about the raw food diet (or should I say, " way of life " ?) It really seems like a great idea to me. Anyway, I was wondering if some of you could give an example of what you would eat on an average day. Also, I need some suggestions for books on the subject that have reliable information and maybe some very simple recipes as I absolutely hate to " cook " . I like my meals to be as simple as possible. Oh, and just for additional information, I have two medium-sized children to feed and a husband who would never agree to eat a meal without some kind of dead, rotting, animal flesh. Thanks so much for all of the great information I have gotten from this list so far. Calla
