Wow, Melanie, that's awesome!

What state do you live in?

I'm in Sarasota, FL and I asked the largest supermarket to carry Thai

coconuts, and they did for a short while, but they stopped. When I asked why,

they

said no one was buying them. I'm in a suburban part of town. (I need to move

to some hipper place.)

I can buy them at the local organic farm (but they're only open two days a

week) and at a health food store too (but they're closed on Sundays). It's

just that the supermarket is closer to where I live and open every day.

I asked my " supermarket " produce manager to order the young Thai coconuts

and he did.

Apparently, they flew off the shelves and now they are keeping their stores

stocked with

them. They are charging about $2.00 each. It is not really a " supermarket " .

I live in a more

or less rural area so we have smaller neighborhood grocery stores. The Asian

market in

the biggest town (2 1/2 hours from where I live, but I do manage to get out

there once a

month) also carries them.

You will not believe this -- I live in Idaho, of all places! At first, they

didn't even know what

baby coconuts were. The first batch that the produce manager was so thrilled

about

getting were just a little lighter brown than the regulars! LOL!!!!!!! He told

me that the

people he ordered from told him those WERE the baby cocos!! About 2 weeks later,

the

" real deal " appeared. About a week after I bought my first 3, the shelves were

empty, and

the manager told me they flew off the shelves and therefore they would continue

to carry

them. I thought the price would be exhorbitant, but I find it's reasonable. I

don't remember

exactly, but it's right around $2. There is a raw foods store in Boise that

carries them, and

I like the owners, but they charge $5 each. There is an Oriental market in

Boise, too (the

capital, and the highest populated area with about 2 million people for the

entire 60 mile

radius, not the city) that told me they carry them, but I've not bought any so I

don't know

what they charge. They carry durians, too.

I think our local market's ability to get the baby cocos & their willingness to

carry them

might have something to do with the fact that Idaho actually has a large

population of

people from more tropical areas such as Mexico, South America, China, and

Africa. Even

though there aren't very many people here, and I live in a small area of Idaho,

we have lots

of speciality foods in the markets here and even one of the market aisles is

titled " Peruvian

Foods " . Where I live, there are 3 small towns in the valley, and there is 1

market in each of

those towns that are all locally owned, except for the 1 Albertson's (chain) in

the middle of

the valley. Also, in one of the markets, there is a very enlightened organic

food purchaser.

Plus, we have a small raw food market/restaurant in the area, but for me, their

prices tend

to be too high. My boyfriend & I joke about taking out a 2nd mortgage when we go

shopping there! LOL!!!
