Guest guest
Good afternoon, Yesterday I picked up two new raw books, RAWvolution by Matt Amsden and The Complete Book of Raw Food. The pictures in the RAWvolution book are inspiring, which got me thinking.... What are you planning for your holiday meal next week? I will be cooking a " traditional " meal for my family since they still eat that kind of stuff, but I hadn't figured out my own holiday meal yet. Any ideas? I look forward to hearing what others will be doing. Guest guest
I'll be spending the day with my cat so I'll probably just have some of my favorite easy-to-prepare dishes. And Thai coconut--maybe two! Guest guest
Hi Leah, > What are you planning for your holiday meal next week? > I will be cooking a " traditional " meal for my family since they still eat that kind of stuff, but I hadn't figured out my own holiday meal yet. Any ideas? We've been collecting a handful of raw Thanksgiving recipes on goneraw.com. http://goneraw.com/recipes/list/thanksgiving So far, I am thinking of making the apple cookies ahead of time and perhaps the cranberries and sweet potatoes. Still at a loss for what to make as the " main course " . I'd love to hear of more ideas for Thanksgiving, as we're hoping to have our first raw Thanksgiving. Guest guest
I appreciated this information and the recipes sound so great. Has ANYONE EVER tried the mock turkey recipes that we keep seeing on everyone's site? I don't want to waste the ingredients if it isn't good. I have NEVER heard anyone say that they liked it. WELL? Guest guest
I think the problem with a lot of recipes is that people are expecting a facsimilie of the real thing and obviously you cannot get turkey shape, texture, or appearance out of nuts. What it does deliver is a food to take up space on your plate on Thanksgiving! Don't know about anyone else, but when I went vegetarian (back then didn't know about raw) there was a big hole on my plate. The names of recipes are deceiving, to me and especially to people new to raw food. Don't know about anybody else, but I do not have time to make recipes everyday. I usually just make green smoothies or grab fruit and eat until sated. These recipes give me something to do in the kitchen on Thanksgiving only because it seems to be a tradition for people to spend time in the kitchen to serve the family. These recipes work for me. And I do enjoy time in the kitchen, always have. And finally, to answer your question, I have not made these specific recipes yet, but the ones I have made I like. They have the same spices as stuffing and I like those savory flavors. I do warm mine in the dehydrator, especially the " turkey " . Put some raw, chunky cranberry sauce with it and I'm happy. The only recipes I have a problem with are the ones that come in " potatoes & gravy " . No way does ground up cauliflower resemble potatoes! Hope this helps. Guest guest
I agree, Shari. I don't think we should even try to duplicate old favorites. Just let the memories suffice. And make some new favorites. As for the " mashed potatoes " , it's in no way, " scrumptious " " delicious " " satisfying " or any of the other adjectives I've heard applied to them. It has a " bite " that real potatoes don't and I spent probably $5 to make it only to toss it on the compost pile. That's when I learned to make small amounts of something until I know whether it's worth the time, trouble, and ingredients. Maybe it would be more inviting as " Cauliflower Mush. " NOT! Guest guest
I tried a mock turkey last year. I have no idea whether it tasted anything like real turkey or not because I've never had real turkey. I would hazard a guess that it doesn't. All I know is, it wasn't tasty even if it had been named something else. The one I tried is here>> http://hishealingways.com/mockturkey/mockturkey.html Tommie http://reallyrawfood.com rawfood , " Judy Cozza " <judycozza wrote: > > I appreciated this information and the recipes sound so great. > > Has ANYONE EVER tried the mock turkey recipes that we keep seeing on > everyone's > site? Guest guest
There are quite a few holiday recipes in the recipe files on the list website rawfood/files under food management & nutrition Here is a tinyurl which should get you there quickly http://tinyurl.com/yjhdrr I have made many of these recipes myself. As a matter of fact, the mock turkey was the first raw " recipe " I ever made (back in the 70s). I still make it. Does it taste like turkey? Well, I've never been your biggest turkey fan, and it does turn out green, but it is quite tasty. It was popular at the vegetarian Thanksgiving I took it to the first year I made it. The Sweet Potatoes Oh My were a such a hit when I made them last week that I will be making them again tonight. (It makes a lot, so I ended up making my first ever cookies, by putting globs on teflex sheets and dehydrating for 24 hours. Those were so good that I will be making some tonight as well, to take to a shiva I'm going to on Monday, and I think I'll make some to take to the fellow across the hall who is beside himself, with newly diagnosed diabetes, because his doctor has told him no more cookies) Both of these recipes have been specially requested by my non-raw roommate, as well. I have come across some more recipes which I will probably post tonight (I'll send notification when I do) Margaret rawfood , " Tommie " <jerushy wrote: > > I tried a mock turkey last year. Now, it has been 10 years since I've had turkey, but my guess is that this mock turkey was as much like turkey as garden-burgers are like hamburgers; they're not the same thing, but they sort of take the place. For day-to-day life, I'm not so into recipes that mock-up something cooked, but for my first raw Thanksgiving, recipes like that just might get me through! Also, I tried a raw un-mashed potato recipe today that knocked the socks off of any that I have tried that use cauliflower. It was by chef Bruce Horowitz who was up to letting me post it online. Nice guy. http://goneraw.com/recipes/show/66 Cheers, Kandace
Guest guest
Hi Judy: I have made the mock turkey recipe from the Live Food book many times. Actually, it was the first thing that I ever made from a raw food cookbook. It has always been popular when I have served it. I've been making it for about 30 years.
