Guest guest
Hey Folks, I would like your collective opinion on the smoothie I had for breakfast this morning. I am kinda-sorta doing the fruit-'til-noon thing that Harvey Diamond talked about in this book " Fit for Life, Not Fat for Life. " It kinda works for me--when I do it I feel better, though I can't really say why. Anyway, here is what I made: 2 apples 1 banana 1 kiwi 4 soaked dates 1 avocado I think that's all. I added a little water for combining. It makes a really yummy smoothie and is filling. Does it sound too fattening? I know it's a lot of fruit. Sometimes when I have other fruits, such as asian pears (yum!) I'll add those as well in place of an apple. I've also done it with fewer dates and less avocodo. I do need to lose weight (about 35 lbs). Would this prevent me from losing? I like having the avocado in it--the fat seems to make it more filling. Thanks for any comments/opinions you have. Guest guest
I'd leave out the avocado and if you want more thickness, add more bananas. I usually do 1/2 a bunch of spinach or half a head of romaine with 1 cup water, 3 or 4 pears or right now I'm doing overripe persimmons. I try to keep it as simple as I can. Very rarely do I go over two ingredients and I never use dates to sweeten, I just use more fruit. Ripe pears are very good for sweetening. Guest guest
I ran your smoothie ingredients through a calorie-counting program and it looks like it has about 750. Between 1200 and 1500 calories per day promotes weight loss in most people so your smoothie is half or more of that. Unless you're not eating for the rest of the day, I don't think you will lose with this recipe. You might consider cutting your portion size down to 1/2 or even 1/3 of the total, or maybe just making less; i.e., 1/4 avo, 1/2 banana, 1 kiwi, 2 dates, and 1 small apple (closer to 300 calories). Good luck. - Elizabeth Phillips rawfood Wednesday, November 22, 2006 6:39 AM [Raw Food] Evaluate my smoothie . . . Guest guest
sounds great and very filling but if you are not a extremly active athlete...this may be too much calories and fat espec. if you are trying to loose wt. I would concentrate on more berries, less banana and avocado...and dates they are so high in sugar berries, water,1/3 avo maybe, apple or pear and Maybe 1/2 banana --- Elizabeth Phillips <PhillipsFamily wrote: > Hey Folks, > > I would like your collective opinion on the smoothie > I had for breakfast this morning. Guest guest
Hi there, I am no expert but a whole avocado is quite a bit of fat, though it's a healthy fat at least. I would wonder about adding greens to it though I know that isn't Fit For Life. I'm guessing you could experiment with it as is, and see how you feel on it and whether or not you lose weight. If it were me, I'd probably put in less avocado (experiment with 1/4 to 1/2) and omit the dates completely and see what I think. I have been doing a lot of green smoothies (about 60% fruit and 40% greens) and would have thought I'd need a sweetener, but I really don't. I just have whole fruit, greens and water, and throw in some ground flax seeds and it usually seems plenty sweet enough. Guest guest
Another combo to try is Banana, mango, orange and spinach. Oh my it is sooooooo good! Have either the banana or mango be frozen and it is simply delish. I generally use one orange, one frozen banana, one large mango or a pile of mango chunks, and then fill the rest of my blender with spianch. It comes out a lovely bright green color that is great to see in the morning. Hmm... good! Taevia On Nov 22, 2006, at 7:06 PM, Elizabeth Phillips wrote: > Hmmm....I forgot about the blueberries. Guest guest
I'm getting in on this a little late, Elizabeth, but if you are concerned about food combining for optimum nutrition, you wouldn't put the kiwifruit with bananas or dates or the avocado with any kind of fruit. My very favorite smoothie is three bananas, a large ripe mango, a little water, and enough spinach to make it very green. I don't freeze any of my fruit. If it's frozen to begin with, I thaw it before I use it because I don't want to chill my gizzard. Or my stomach. I don't put water with my smoothies unless there is a fruit that thickens (like mango, apple, or blueberries). It's better for digestion not to thin it out too much. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Another neat smoothie that is one of my all-time favorites is pineapple with a handful or two of dark greens added to it-- it's wonderful. And I might add that Norman Walker, a raw food teacher/author who lived supposedly to 109 or something like that (apparently there's some contradiction, but he lived to well over 90 for sure) recommended blended pineapple/greens drinks in particular, and also lived on a lot of blended salads and blended fruit drinks. I will try to find and post the link to the website of the qigong master who says that blended vegetable and fruit drinks are essential and much better than juicing because-- according to him anyway-- it's the phytochemicals in the roughage, rather than the vitamins and minerals in the liquid, that contain the highest healing qualities. (Of course juice and blender drinks are both great.) At 57-- like all of you, I'm sure-- I am still always experimenting and trying different 'angles' and combinations of raw diet to find and create the ultimate alchemy of raw diet, qigong, meditation, rest, sunshine, etc. Cheap Talk?
