I just wanted to rave about Bulk Barn. We got a new one in our area and I went

shopping happy. For $26.00 I got all the raw food I ever dreamed I could find.

Does anyone else love bulk stores? I find it helps me stay raw. How about you?

Wish we had something like that here in Cambridge, MA. Even the local co-op is

exorbitant. Organic mangos can go for anywhere from $3-4.99, and I don't even

look at the organic berries anymore-- $5-$6 a pint usually. Grapes are

completely out of my range also. I eat a lot of oranges and bananas, apples,

non-organic mangos, even Goya frozen mango or guava pulp in my smoothies

sometimes because it's so much cheaper. I always try to get organic red

peppers, though, even though they're $4-6 a pound.

I'm going to have to start traveling (bus, train or walking) around Boston--

to nearby towns and also to Chinatown-- to get cheaper fruits and vegies, also

exostic fruits that aren't available to me locally.

It's true -- not much in the way of local grown in New England this

time of year. I suppose our native predecessors would have been

living on stored grains, nuts, dried fruit and fruit cellar

fruits/roots with a bit of fish and game. According to the

Connecticut casino museums, the Mohawk were corn farmers. I heard

that in colonial days lobster was considered a trash food that you'd

eat when you were poor; it was so plentiful.

I'm a huge fan of the local apples. About once a week or two I make

the pilgrimage to Bolton Orchards for bulk apples; mostly macs, but

the Red Delicious are true to their name. They say the Johnny

" Appleseed " Chapman was originally from nearby Leominster, Mass., and

he really liked apples, too.

One of the big veggie wholesalers, the Harper family, recently opened

a posh farm stand in Lancaster, Rt 70 just off Rt 2; Oak Ridge Farms.

I drop by there on my way back from Bolton, because their greens are

a little fresher. I used to buy those premixed salad packs, but it's

so much cheaper to mix my own. Also, I'll admit I like a little slab

of grass fed red a few times a year and theirs are local

hormone/antibiotic free.

Trader Joes has raw almonds for half the price as any other place I've

seen around here -- about $5 a pound -- but I've heard the nuts are

pasteurized so I'm not entirely sure it's raw. They still plump up

with a soak.

I'm a huge fan of raisins and dates. They're my sweetener. I keep my

eyes open for sales on bananas -- sometimes $.30 a pound -- and

pineapple. I dunno where they come from, but the cantaloupes have

been really nummy this month; pricy, but a treat.

That's where I am on affordable New England winter fare. Still learning!

David,

Thanks for the good ideas about where to find produce cheaply in the Boston

area. I forgot to mention Trader Joe's-- there's one not far from my house and

we do buy dried fruit and nuts there sometimes, which are excellent. Apples are

a great (and logical) local food choice that I haven't given quite enough

attention to. I've been having my 'special' applesauce once every day: apples

(1 or 2) + dried apples (1/2 c) + raisins + lemon-tahini sauce, cinnamon and 1/2

tsp. of vanilla, blended = bliss.

I really want to get my hands on some sapote and durian, and I'm pretty sure

they're only available in Chinatown. If you have any ideas where I can buy

them, please send me a note off-list. Thanks!

There will come a time in the very near future when,

like the meat-production industry today,

the fruit growers of America will recieve the massive

subsidies...and you'll be able to buy that " Big Pint " for $.99.

Whoopee!
