I have been interested in the raw diet for years now. I even tried it

once, but didn't suceed at converting. Now, I feel I NEED to focus on

this.

I became a mom on the 7th of January. I am breastfeeding. I feel like

everything I eat makes her sick in one way or another. I KNOW cow milk

REALLY upsets her. I think chocolate may be a issue for her too. Add

to that, I'm exhausted and I'm eating like crap.

My challenge is the fact that raw eating seems to take so much longer to

plan and prepare. Being a new mom, time is already limited - but I know

this is something worth my time.

My question is, does anyone have any information on raw diet while

nursing and/or an easy conversion into raw? I'm not sure I can run to

the store, buy a dehydrator, juicer, blender, etc. I have never

sprouted my own anything and the thought of it kind of intimdates me (I

kill ANY plant that is around me - it seems sprouting would be the same

thing).

I REALLY want to do this, I feel it will turn my life around, it just

seems TOTALLY overwhelming right now.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

Thanks!

Karena

Karena,

I have never been raw while nursing, but really, raw eating is not as

complicated as all that.

To start, all you really need is a place that sells good fruit, fresh,

whole, ripe (possibly organic or better), and just eat.

I had been eating raw for several months before it dawned on me that it

was supposed to be hard.

For me, raw was synonymous with " unprepared " " easy " " instant " .

The produce sections in farmers markets and grocers was a whole new

world to me, rather than getting the standard pithy, gratuitous salad

ingredients.

Start with foods you like, and just eat.

I am sure you will find plenty of resources such as Alissa Cohen's

website rawfoodtalk.com etc, where you can find recipes.

Hi Karena,

Congratulations on becoming a mom! I'm sure you want to do this as

quickly and easily as possible. I would highly recommend going

straight to Dr. Doug Graham's new book, " The 80/10/10 Diet. " It will

lay it all out for you in the clearest way, cut down on the confusion,

it will make total sense, and the diet couldn't be easier. You don't

need fancy equipment, just to start eating as nature intended. You and

your baby will be feeling better in no time!

Best wishes,

Laurie

Hi Karena,

This is such a wonderful beautiful thing you are doing for you and your

baby! I really enjoy the ease of green smoothies (you can get a blender

from the thrift store for a few bucks... when it burns-out I buy another for

like $3.) I blend with water, dark leafy greens (like, kale, collards,

romaine, parsley), a piece or 2 of fruit (like, pear, banana, orange, date,

or blueberries), 1/2-1 avo. (or another fatty thing, like pumpkin seeds or

coconut oil). That is the main smoothie and totally great without anything

else added... but if I'm feeling into it I add anything, but not everything,

like tomato or asparagus. I love to add algae (spirulina, chlorella, and/or

AFA). And/or any sea veggies, ultra high quality sea salt, organic

herb/spice mixes, ect! It's so easy to toss stuff in the blender then sip

away while getting things done! You can make a huge smoothie and split for

lunch and dinner to save time. For breakfast I like to make a smoothie of

fruit with coconut oil and/or avo, and algae. Or just munch on fresh fruit

when I get hungry. I some times have a little snack of nuts/seeds and fresh

or dried fruit, herb tea, or a raw chocolate drink (but I wouldn't eat cacao

if I were nursing.) I hope this helps :) Blessings to you and your baby!

Peace,

Shawna

Hello Karena,

First of all, congratulations! I am a nursing mother myself (2 kids, age 4

and 2). I understand your delema, I have been there. The two things that

helped me were seeing an allergist for my baby and also following the Eat To

Live diet. If you are not familiar with it, in a nutshell it is vegan (or

provegan) raw fruit and veggie based with some cooked veggies and very

little grains. It emphasizes greens, fruit and beans. I am in the process

of transitioning to a completely raw lifestyle and after a year of doing E2L

my nurslings allergies have subsided, I lost 70 lbs, feel great and headed

off a major ppd (postpardum depression) breakdown.

There is a .groups group for E2L. I wish you the best of luck.

Ann

P.S. seeing an allergist will help your peace of mind too!

Thank you so much Ann! I will definitly have to check it out!

Random question, did the beans or veggies give your little ones gas? This is my

biggest concern...

Hi Karena,

When my second was 8 mos. she did get gas from pureed veggies (raw and

cooked) but not from beans...go figure. I took her off food at that point

and exclusively nursed until I went to an allergist. Her problems didn't go

away until we took out nuts, dairy, wheat, coconut and sesame (from my

diet). Allergies are different for everyone though. I'm sad she's allergic

to nuts but I am hoping it'll go away at some point. I still can't get over

how much my diet affects the milk quality. When I eat a lot of greens (like

over a pound a day) everyone is so much healthier. It's like what they say

grass does to cows' milk! The intense phytonutrients make the most

life-giving milk. Mooo (sorry folks) :)

Congrats again! Have fun with your little sweetie!
