The financial assets of U.S. foundations declined by an average of about 26% in 2008, which is said to be the biggest drop in recorded history. A fourth of donors have reduced the amounts that they give to charity as a result of the economy. The current financial situation is a difficult one for everyone, especially nonprofit organizations that often run on shoestring budgets. 2009 Unwanted Horses Survey

Addressing the causes and magnitude of the unwanted horse population in the United States, this research found that 90% of survey respondents believe that the number of unwanted, neglected, and abused horses is increasing. The vast m

ajority (87%) said that over the last year unwanted horses have become a "big problem," compared with only 22% who said the same thing three years ago. The number of horse euthanizations is on the rise.

A report on Thailand's illegal ivory market documents more than 26,000 ivory products for sale in local markets, in addition to the growing number of retail outlets offering these products in 2008. Overall, however, fewer worked ivory products were on sale in 2008 compared with 2001. Insufficient laws and legal enforcement continue to make Thailand the largest illegal ivory market in Asia.
