Seminar Reminder :Animal Rights, The Constitution & Exploring the Limits of Dignity

Dear All,

Please find attached two papers for the cutting-edge seminar

to be held tomorrow on the topic: “Animal

Rights, The Constitution & Exploring the Limits of Dignity: Do the Benefits

of Fundamental Rights only Extend to Human Beings?â€

The seminar is part of the “Is

This Seat Taken? Conversations at the Bar, the Bench and in the Academyâ€

seminar series. The following are the details

of the seminar:

Wednesday, 16 September 2009

Time: 12h30,

Venue:

The Old Fort, Constitution Hill in the SAIFAC seminar room.

The presentation will be made by Dr David Bilchitz, Director

of SAIFAC. The response will be given by Prof Thaddeus Metz of the University

of Johannesburg. Dr Bilchitz’s paper provides a number of arguments for

extending the fundamental rights recognised in the Constitution to non-human

animals. Prof Metz provides two arguments against the strategy of

interpretation adopted in Dr Bilchitz’s paper. The seminar promises to be a stimulating

engagement and we look forward to welcoming you as part of the discussion.

David Bilchitz is Director of the South

African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights and

International Law (SAIFAC). He is also a Senior Research Associate at the

laude from Wits University and an MPhil and PhD from the University of

Cambridge.

Thaddeus Metz is a Research Professor in

Philosophy at the University of Johannesburg who has published about 50 papers

on a variety of normative topics. With regard to his research in political and

legal philosophy, Metz has traced out the implications of both African and

Kantian moral foundations for just approaches to a variety of contemporary

issues, including: legislation, criminal justice, the death penalty, deadly

force, crime prevention, medical rationing and immigration. His work has

appeared in international journals such as: The Oxford Journal of Legal

Studies, Law and Philosophy, Philosophy and Public Affairs, The Journal of

Political Philosophy, Archives for Social Philosophy and Philosophy of Law and

The Journal of Human Rights, as well as in local forums that

include: the South African Journal on Human Rights, Theoria

and Juta’s textbook Jurisprudence. Recent awards include an

"A" rating for his research from the South African National Research

Foundation (NRF) and a research fellowship from the Stellenbosch Institute for

Advanced Study (STIAS).
