The Jack Russell found inside its owner's property with its hind leg ripped

off at the pelvis is stable and has been eating.

Cora Bailey from the Community Led Animal Welfare

Organisation (Claw) was called to the Krugersdorp West property on Monday by

a neighbour who had heard the male Jack Russell howling the day before.

Bailey found the dog lying in the driveway, covered in flies.

The neighbour said the woman who owned the dog had gone to work as usual that

morning, and must have walked past her pet.

Vet Dion Koekemoer operated on the dog to clean its wound of maggots and

begin a skin-stretching procedure hich might make it possible to close the

wound. He also gave it a blood transfusion.

He said the dog was eating by itself, which was a good sign, but that it was

still very weak.

Under the Animal Protection Act, it is a criminal offence not to seek medical

attention for your animals.

Krugersdorp SPCA inspector Veronica Fourie said they were waiting for

Koekemoer's report so they could open a case against the owner, who seems to

have disappeared.

· The dog's medical costs are

the responsibility of Claw.
