Illegal hunting is threatening the animal population in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, park authorities said.In a communique, Mateus Muthemba, director of community relations, said the problem was complex because of the socio-economic values of the local people who are used to hunting wild animals.Park statistics indicated 3500 animals - such as wild pig and other smaller animals - were killed each year and sold locally.Gorongosa National Park, in the central Sofala province, is Mozambique's biggest animal reserve and attracts thousands of tourists each year.At the height of the country's civil war in the 1980s, the park's animal population was wiped out by armed forces on both sides.

Rehabilitation of the park began in 1994 and it has since benefited from translocation of animals from neighbouring South Africa and Zimbabwe. - Sapa
