Guest guest Posted December 28, 2009 Report Share Posted December 28, 2009 Illegal hunting threatens Mozambique park December 28 2009 at 10:43AM Get IOL on yourmobile at m.iol.co.za Submit your comment Illegal hunting is threatening the animal population in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park, park authorities said.In a communique, Mateus Muthemba, director of community relations, said the problem was complex because of the socio-economic values of the local people who are used to hunting wild animals.Park statistics indicated 3500 animals - such as wild pig and other smaller animals - were killed each year and sold locally.Gorongosa National Park, in the central Sofala province, is Mozambique's biggest animal reserve and attracts thousands of tourists each year.At the height of the country's civil war in the 1980s, the park's animal population was wiped out by armed forces on both sides.
