Dear Friend of the DHT

As the new Chief Executive of the Dr Hadwen Trust, I would like to send my warmest greetings and wish you a very Happy New Year from all the staff. This is an exciting time for me to be joining our vibrant team. With 2010 marking the 40th anniversary of the DHT, we have an exceptionally busy year ahead promoting humane science and funding cutting-edge non-animal medical research. We will keep you up to date with our plans to celebrate this milestone anniversary, including ways that you can help us raise vital awareness about advancing medical progress without animal experiments.Thank you for your continued support of our important work and I look forward to sharing the next exciting chapter of the DHT with all of you.

Is medical science doing enough to replace, reduce and refine animal experiments?

The DHT’s Science Director, Dr Sebastien Farnaud, joins Dr Vicky Robinson from the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research, in debating this key question in The Times’ Eureka science magazine.Check out what they both have to say in this month’s issue of Eureka where you can read their Fight Club essays and view their on-line debate.

Record number of humane research applications

The DHT has received a record number of applications from scientists for grants to develop non-animal techniques to replace animal experiments in medical research. This is an 84% increase in applications from the previous year and the highest overall intake in our forty year history. An increasing interest from scientists to develop new technology, which will advance medical research and replace animal experiments in the laboratory is a positive and significant step forward. The successful grant recipients and projects will be announced in the summer.
