CONFINED within small, standardised cages, the outlook for millions of laboratory animals rarely varied. Until now. When seen from the viewpoint of these non-consenting research participants, 2009 was a year of stark contrasts. At first, the year seemed the same as always. Around July, the Home Office released its annual animal experimentation statistics for the previous year. Last year, however, some- thing was different. The statistics revealed a significantly greater increase in scientific procedures involving animals in 2008, compared to any other year since comparable records began (in 1988).
