MUTTS TO MONTECITO!

ANOTHER PET SHOP PROJECT SUCCESS!

FEBRUARY 20-21, 2010

Last Chance for Animals (LCA) celebrated National Spay Day last weekend at The Montecito Pet Shop, the most recent pet store to join LCA's Pet Shop Project. LCA's Pet Shop Project works closely with pet store owners, helping them to transition from selling puppy mills dogs and backyard breeder dogs, to carrying only rescues. These courageous pet store owners are learning important skills, similar to what rescue groups must master in order to survive: raising funds, getting media attention, and securing proper and affordable medical care for the animals, as well as training their staff on how to match the right dog with the right customer/owner.

Mutts to Montecito, the two-day Spay day celebration brought out the local community in Santa Barbara to The Montecito Pet Shop. The first day focused on educating people about the importance of spaying and neutering pets, speaking to media, and raising funds with a silent auction and raffle. Numerous local businesses in Santa Barbara donated their goods and services to the silent auction to help The Montecito Pet Shop raise money to help pay the stack of veterinary bills that go along with rescuing animals from high-kill shelters! Although Care4Paws generously has donated all the spay/neuter procedures

for the first 1000 dogs to be adopted from The Montecito Pet Shop, dogs that are rescued from shelters often have illnesses that can cost thousands of dollars in vet bills.

A recent article in USA Today reports that people do not consider fixing their pets a priority. This is incredibly disturbing, considering how much information is out there on the problem (and cost) of pet overpopulation; millions of dollars are spent per year euthanizing unwanted animals. One of the goals of LCA's Pet Shop Project is to educate local communities about pet overpopulation and the importance of spaying/neutering. Organizations like Care4Paws are helping immensely by offering communities inexpensive and convenient spay/netuer clinics. This is key in putting a dent

in pet overpopulation!

Steve McGarva, "the dog rescuer," was in attendance both days of the event, speaking to locals and the media about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. LCA will be joining him in Mexico in April to assist with the opening of a spay/neuter clinic in Cancun!

Many animals were adopted out during the two-day event thanks to The Montecito Pet Shop and other rescue groups who brought their animals. Many applications to adopt were submitted over the weekend (every applicant is vetted carefully by the rescue group), so there will be many more animals adopted out in the next week!

The Montecito Pet Shop has rescued and re-homed

45 dogs since October 22, 2009!

Help us put puppy mills out-of-business, and get pet stores across the country to do the right thing and carry only rescues!

Educate your friends, family, and community about the importance of fixing your pet!

SB 250 - The Pet Responsibility Act - has been put on hold since January 2010. This bill would provide a reasonable, fiscally responsible step towards reducing pet overpopulation in California. The bill simply requires that dogs be spayed or neutered unless their owner/guardian obtains an unaltered dog license when they license their animal. It also requires that roaming cats be spayed and neutered by their owner/guardian. Contact your senators and representatives and urge them to co-sponsor this bill!
