Harpseals.org News Alert

Despite the lack of sea ice for the seal mothers to give birth on, leading to desperation and drowning deaths for untold numbers of seal pups, the Canadian government declared that the kill quota for 2010 will be over 388,000 seal pups.

We have only one word to describe this decision: insane.

We have made progress in the fight to end the annual massacre though: the European Union ban on importing any seal products, issued last year is real progress and has left sealers scrambling to find new markets for their bloody products. Case in point: the price paid for pelts was only about $14 last year; and this year, it won't be much better. This should keep many sealers at home again this year.

Kids at the Ocean County street fair care about seals.

It's time to put an end to these massacres, once and for all, and it will take a unified effort by all seal activists. Our task is to promote the boycott of Canadian seafood, with Red Lobster (one of the largest purchasers of Canadian seafood) being a prime target. In addition, we need to promote the boycott of Canadian tourism. Let's get the word out!

Harpseals.org has a new tool, the Seal Activist Network, that will help seal activists find each other and take action for the seals. Please use this map-based networking tool to organize protests, leaflet distribution events, tabling events, funeral motorcades and 'sealmobile caravans', fundraising events, street theater, or any other action for the seals. If you have any questions or need help with this tool, feel free to contact us.

Harpseals.org has been given an opportunity to raise funds through IGive.com. Supporters don't even have to spend any money. Here's how it works: If you have not yet joined iGive, join by going through the link on our home page (or just go to www.igive.com/Harpseals), between noon, Wednesday, March 24th, and 11:59 am, Thursday, March 25th, Central Daylight Time. Visit one of the participating iGive stores (there are over 750 including cafepress, where Harpseals.org has our Variety Store - see the complete list here). For everyone who does this, up to 5,000 people, Harpseals.org will receive one dollar. If you buy anything, Harpseals.org will receive an additional donation. For your first purchase, Harpseals.org will receive $5, plus the normal percentage for a purchase.

Harpseals.org also has new artwork in our e-store. These beautiful paintings are originals by Kim Zoerb, who specializes in painting harp seals and also paints our famous seal rocks.

Let's keep the pressure on Canada. The seals need us!

Thank you for caring.

For the seals,
