Twisted mobs use dogs to maul

deer

Ron Moore, News of the World

A

chilling News of The World probe can today (28.03.10) expose the evil tactics

used by thugs to slaughter innocent animals across Scotland.

We went undercover with a source connected to the vile world of the illegal

sports. And we discovered that:

RUTHLESS gangs are setting vicious dogs on roe deer in the Borders - to rip

them to pieces so their meat can be sold

BADGERS are also being torn apart as evil dog owners look on and CHEER, and

HUNDREDS of wildlife atrocities are being committed each week by crime clans

the length and breadth of Scotland.

The insider told how heartlesss thugs hunt animals with specially bred dogs.

He said: " Recently they sent terriers into a deer herd, then used lurchers

to chase and bring them down.

" The gangs strike at night and prefer when it's raining as it throws the

deer's senses off. Bright lamps are used to stun them.

" Then two or three dogs will rip the deer into pieces before the carcass

is carved up and taken away. "

Our source took us to a lock-up in Hawick, Roxburghshire, used to stash freshly

killed deer.

We saw the remains of three pregnant does that had been slaughtered the night

before in woods on a nearby estate. The creatures' mutilated bodies were laid

out on a blue tarpaulin.

Later, they would be butchered for their venison meat, to be sold on the black

market.

Another source in Lauder, Berwickshire, told us that illegal BADGER-BAITING is

also a huge pastime in the Borders.

He explained: " The gangs use lurchers, terriers and pitbulls for baiting.

" They go to a sett, dig out a badger then set the dogs on them. They love

watching the fights. Some even FILM it on video cameras or phones.

" The guys cheer on their hand-reared dogs. It's just evil, senseless

slaughter.

" The badgers fight back hard. They have powerful jaws and sharp claws and

are defending their homes.

" If the dog needs help, another will be sent in. But some guys end up just

SHOOTING the badger. "

Our source told us badger-baiting rings are also known to operate in the Hawick

and Jedburgh areas of the Borders. And big-city hoods are also muscling in on

the sickening spectacle.

He explained: " Heavies from the likes of Newcastle and Sunderland have

been getting involved, while gangs in Aberdeen, Fife, Central Scotland and the

Glasgow area are into dog-fighting in a big way.

" Now badgers are being sold to gangsters for up to £500 each to use in

fights. "

Our findings have been passed on to the SSPCA and Lothian and Borders Police.

There are around 25,000 badgers and 400,000 roe deer in Scotland. But crimes

involving cruelty to animals have almost TREBLED in a decade - from 140 in

1999-2000 to 384 in 2008-09.

Last month a top prosecutor was appointed to help tackle the problem. The Crown

Office also has 18 wildlife crime experts across the country.

Anyone convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to animals faces up to a year

in jail, a £20,000 fine and could be banned for life from owning or keeping

pets or livestock.

The courts can also confiscate the thugs' vans, cars, equipment, dogs and

cages.

Last night an SSPCA investigations officer told us: " Sadly deer-coursing

and badger-baiting are becoming more prevalent across Scotland.

" But the men behind these crimes are nothing but violent, evil thugs. We

urge anyone with information about them and their activities to call our

special investigations unit hotline on 0800 999 4000. "
