Guest guest
Friday December 16, 2005 - The Star Thieves raid snake farm BY BERNARD SEE PENANG: Ten valuable snakes, including two Red Albino Corn Snakes, have been stolen from the snake farm next to the famed Snake Temple in Bayan Lepas here. Snake handler Arun Raveendran, 20, who discovered the theft when he arrived for work at about 9am on Wednesday, said six types of snakes were taken from the vivaria. " The thieves seemed to know what to take as they only targeted snakes that are popular with collectors, such as the Albino Green Burmese Python, Red Albino Corn Snake and Carpet Python, " he said. He believed at least two thieves had gained entry by climbing up a tree outside the farm. " The thieves may have made numerous trips to the farm to have a good look at the layout before striking, " he said yesterday. Arun said the snakes were valued by collectors for their striking skin patterns. " In the open market, a Red Albino Corn Snake can easily fetch RM3,000 or even more, " he said, noting that the 10 snakes stolen were worth around RM18,000. Snake farm operator Joe Teoh said security at the farm has since been tightened. A report was made at the Bayan Lepas police station on Wednesday.
