Guest guest
Dear Friend of the Orangutan, I have a personal plea to make. Will you take just a few minutes to send some emails to help save orangutans please? Without getting into a lot of graphic detail, which I think I should spare you,I can confirm over 56 and possibly as many as 100 illegally bought orangutans are being held in Thailand. At least 56 are held by the government of Thailand, who will not answer any questions or allow anyone to see these poor animals. The only uncertainty over the number of orangutans is because of the government's secrecy. For over two years these animals have been kept in cramped cages with no branches or other enrichment--only rusty bars to climb over. The words torture, degradation, imprisonment and death spring to mind. Many orangutans have either died or disappeared in this time; 22 were sent, also illegally, to Cambodia. On Christmas day, I received a phone call alerting me to five orangutans about to be sold/exchanged by a Thai zoo. The vast majority of these orangutans were taken from the wild, but only after their mothers will have been killed - more often than not with a machete. All attempts by various organisations have fallen on the deaf ears of the uncaring Thai government. Will you please take a few moments, now - whilst it is fresh in your mind, to send a personal message to the following key Thai government officials. Please be polite but otherwise let them know your own views about their treatment of these highly endangered and fully protected orangutans. Key points are: At least 56 of these orangutans belong to Indonesia. Why do they refuse to allow the orangutans to be returned home to Indonesia, when allthe necessary money and expertise is freely available? Why do they continue to torture and imprison these endangered animals when they could, and should, be back in the forests? In your email Subject box please write: Thailand tortures and kills orangutans Please ask them to reply to you. Send to National Park and Wildlife Department staff: Mr. Damrong Phidet, Director General dg Mr. Schwann Tunikorn, Deputy Director General schwann and also to: Mr. Vikrom Koompirochana Ambassador, thaiduto If you do not receive a reply within a few days, please resend the emails every day until you do - this is very important as the Thai government banks on people losing interest. If you need help or more information please let me know. On behalf of the orangutans. A very Big Thank You for caring. Michelle Desilets Director Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation UK www.savetheorangutan.org.uk P.S. Public pressure does work. Malaysia sent 6 Sumatran orangutans back to Sumatra last week. By all means ask friends to write as well. The orangutan situation in Thailand is desperate.
