Guest guest
http://dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1004602 & CatID=7 His master's voice Jyothi Venkatesh Thursday, December 29, 2005 17:30 IST THE BSPCA has had a number of successful concerts over the years - the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, English Chamber Orchestra, Jagjit Singh, Zakir Hussain, Marat Bisengaliev and his Kazakh Orchestra to name just a few. To celebrate the 131st year of service to animals, to create awareness about the organisation and to raise funds to support their activities, this year round BSPCA, is all set to hold a concert by percussion maestro Trilok Gurtu. It will be in aid of the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals and the BSPCA. Gurtu who has successfully fused Eastern and Western music in his numerous compositions is keen on being instrumental for the welfare of animals. " We make bridges, not barriers, " says Gurtu. Son of Shobha Gurtu, a celebrated vocalist, Trilok whose grandfather was a sitar player, began his career at the age of 6. Later, he collaborated with the legendary trumpeter Don Cherry, and a band with Shankar, Jan Garbarek and Zakir Hussain. He has also performed with John McLaughlin (the fusion guitar virtuoso) in albums and on world tours, and has people like Joe Zawinul (Weather Report), Pat Metheny, Neneh Cherry and Angelique Kidjo working with him. Trilok will perform on January 3, at 7 pm at Jamshed Babha Hall, with a team of Indian musicians Nihar Savla, Vivian Pocha, Devika Pandit, Roopkumar Rathod and Sheldon Desilva. It is interesting to note that, the BSPCA, which has always appreciated music as a form of fund raising will allow free entry to the concert for music students as well as senior citizens. Regarding the choice of artiste, Sunil Mehta, member of the fund raising committee of the BSPCA, justifies, " Trilok Gurtu is an animal lover himself and last year too he had performed for the same initiative. " With everyone applauding his large repertoire at the previous function, the BSPCA committee unanimously decided to invite him this year too.
