Guest guest
Reasons for ban must be explained - letters to NST L.Y. Shah Alam Jan 5 -- I REFER to your report that Rottweilers have been banned in Shah Alam houses as of Jan 1 this year, which the Shah Alam City Council says is based on advice given to them by the Selangor Veterinary Services Department. The DVS must now explain to all responsible Rottweiler owners in Shah Alam and Malaysia and satisfy them with the facts on how they arrived at such a drastic conclusion to damn one of the most popular and best-loved dog breeds in the world. If it is true that Rottweilers are " dangerous " dogs, then why are they still being allowed to be shown at professional dog shows not only in Malaysia but also around the world, where the breed frequently dominates the top prize awards? The move behind the banning of Rottweilers in Shah Alam clearly indicates that some important people have not seriously done their homework in properly advising the Shah Alam City Council. A careful study of the breed would have revealed that Rottweilers have served humankind for more than 2,000 years. The breed has proven its effectiveness since the days of ancient Rome where they played a vital role in herding livestock and protecting property from wolves and bandits. In our present day, they are dogs unlike any other breed for their courage and staying power in arduous tasks such as police, military and rescue work. Above all, they have proven extremely loyal and loving, especially with children. They are excellent for security with their natural inclination to protect families. Their menacing look is enough to ward off thieves and keep criminals at bay. Getting rid of Rottweilers will not stop attacks by dogs. Without these dogs in the city, it will be the German Shepherds or Dobermans which will end up on the hit list next, until there are no more dogs in Shah Alam. The authorities should instead make Rottweiler ownership tougher for careless owners, go after illegal dog breeders and come down hard on irresponsible dog owners to make our society a safer one for everyone.
