Doggone licensing rules

IN THE past when a dog licence cost RM5 in Teluk Intan, there were

many owners who thought going to the post-office to queue up for a dog

licence was an inconvenience they could do without.

Their dogs were dispensable and they would not think twice about

getting rid of them by abandoning them.

This year, a dog licence in Teluk Intan cost RM12. An application form

has to be obtained first and only after a photograph of the owner, a

photocopy of his identity card and the filling in of personal and dog

particulars would the form be processed.

Owners have to eventually produce the vaccination card of the dog.

The small orange tag which is issued to each successful applicant is

the dog's licence till the end of the year.

How many owners are going to be willing to go to such lengths to

legalise their dogs now? For the handful who are willing, they are

only allowed to keep two dogs in their premises.

This means if they have had four dogs, which they have been loving and

caring for for the past eight years without problems, they would now

have to decide what to do with the extra dogs.

Putting them down at the prime of their lives, when they are healthy,

neutered and having a great life is unthinkable.

Licensed dogs found outside the premises unsupervised would be caught

and destroyed. Malaysia is fast becoming a difficult place for dog

lovers and dogs.

LOVE ALL LIFE,

Teluk Intan.
