Seventy dogs saved from slaughter

by Marlon Ramos, The Inquirer

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna -- Members of the Task Force Meteor of the

Calabarzon police intercepted at a checkpoint in Batangas two passenger

jeepneys carrying more than 70 dogs that were going to be sold in

Baguio City and the Ilocos region.

Chief Superintendent Jesus Verzosa, police director of Calabarzon

(Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon region), said the two vehicles

were seized at a police checkpoint in the village of Antipolo, Lipa

City around 10 p.m. on Friday. He said police arrested drivers Nilo de

Lloro and Pastor Escanos, and helpers Danilo Quiray and Ernesto

Villamil. All were residents of Quiloquilo village, Padre Garcia,

Batangas.

Verzosa said members of the task force were conducting a routine

inspection of vehicles in the area when they chanced upon a jeep

loaded with dogs kept in small cages. He said De Lloro told the police

that they were about to deliver the dogs to a slaughterhouse in Baguio

City. Moments later, the second jeepney driven by Escanos was held for

transporting dogs.
