Guest guest
Jumbo festival at KNP from Jan 30 From our Correspondent JORHAT, Jan 17: The stage is set for the fourth edition of the mega elephant festival at the Kohora range in the Kaziranga National Park. The Bokakhat subdivisional administration and the Forest Department will jointly hold the thee-day jumbo carnival at the playground of the Kaziranga High School from January 30. Food marts comprising traditional cuisines, pavilions of ethnic attire and several other colourful events will mark the festival. The highlight of the festival will be the presentation of games by elephants. In conformity with the overall theme of the carnival, a number of seminars and workshops have also been planned. Experts have been invited to attend these sessions. In addition to this, jumbo processions and a variety of cultural programmes showcasing the ethnic heritage of the State will be the hallmarks of the elephant festival. Popular artistes from all over the State are expected to perform at the cultural evenings lined up for the carnival. The organizers of the festival said that the overriding consideration is the mitigation of the man-elephant conflict which has assumed alarming proportions in recent times. An effort is made to shape public opinion and spread awareness about elephant conservation in general through these festivals, they added. The first elephant festival was held at the KNP in 2003. Since then these festivals have gained recognition as the biggest of their kind in the world. Carnivals featuring the gentle giants, the largest mammals on the earth, are also held in Thailand.
