Workshop on elephant care

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Elephant Care, an organisation working for the welfare of

elephants, is to organise a workshop for creating awareness among

elephant owners, here on January 28.

V. Gopinath, Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), will inaugurate

the workshop.

The workshop will offer a common platform to elephant owners and

Government authorities to discuss issues involved in handling captive

elephants, said E. Nandakumar, secretary of the organisation.

The organisers expect nearly 100 elephant owners to attend the

workshop apart from the Forest Department officials. A website of the

organisation will be launched at the workshop.

The organisation has plans to insure mahouts in the State who take

proper care of the animals.

In the first phase, 100 such mahouts will be selected and an insurance

cover of Rs.1 lakh each will be provided to them.

The organisation had conducted a `Gaja Raksha' camp for the animals in

Thripunithura.
