SKY News Channel

World News Tonight 20:00, Monday 30th January 2006

Orangutans and Palm Oil, extended news feature, presented by Lisa

Holland, SKY News

Cockroach Productions has been working hand-in-hand with the Ape

Alliance to profile the destructive expansion of oil palm plantations into

orangutan habitat. In tonight's feature you will see images of

frontline orangutan conservation filmed with the Borneo Orangutan

Survival Foundation, on location in Central Kalimantan.

The program discusses the consumption of palm oil on an international

scale and addresses the issue of supermarket responsibility in the palm oil

trade. Most consumers are unaware that one out of ten products in UK

supermarkets

now contains palm oil. The program examines the future of the industry and

the efforts of conservationists to insure a future for the orangutan by

encouraging a move towards sustainable, orangutan-friendly palm oil plantations.

The program has already caused a stir in the retail sector. We

can expect some positive developments to come out of this program and

the broader high-profile campaign that has been led by a number of organizations

dedicated to protecting the future of the orangutan. Be sure to tune in --

and find out more about Nick and Evie's work on the campaign at
