Guest guest
Lunar New Year: French animal lovers howl at Chinese dog slaughter Fri Jan 27 PARIS (AFP) - France's Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) appealed to Chinese President Hu Jintao to put an end to the cruel slaughter of dogs, which it blasted as an affront. " The SPA does not set itself up as a judge of a country and its culture, but is asking for animals to be killed in a dignified way, " the SPA said. " Millions of dogs (in China) are hanged, beaten with sticks and butchered while they are still alive, " it said in a press release. The organisation added that it had tried to get French media to accept an advertisement as part of its campaign against dog butchering, but the picture -- of an animal being cut to pieces in a pool of blood -- was so graphic that it had been rejected by every newspaper. The upcoming Chinese New Year on Sunday ushers in the Year of the Dog. Up to 10 million dogs are slaughtered every year in China, many killed slowly and cruelly to supposedly enhance the meat's flavour, according to animal rights groups. http://news./s/afp/20060127/lf_afp/afplifestylechinalunar_060127182821 -------------- THE FOLLOWING IS A MACHINE TRANSLATION Societe Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) site: Année du chien : la SPA demande au Président chinois d'intervenir! [Year of the dog: the SPA requires of the Chinese President to intervene!] With the day before of Chinese New Year's day (year of the dog), the SPA wished to carry out a posting campaign on the conditions of demolition of the dogs in China. We hold to inform the public opinion that the whole of the advertisers and bill-posters refused our countryside, considered shocking by its photograph, photograph which is only the reflection of terrible reality. Serge Belais, President of the SPA, point out " that to in no case the SPA does not judge a country and its culture but request which the animals is not cut down with dignity and cut up alive " . Let us recall that million dogs is hung, struck with blows of stick (to tenderize the flesh) and cut up whereas they are always in life " Of such tortures are unworthy of a country, the SPA requires officially of the President of the Mr. Hu Jintao, People's Republic of China, to put a term at such practices which scandalize the public opinion. France cannot remain indifferent to such acts and vis-a-vis a country which thus mistakes to be alive for it! Guest guest
Thank you for posting this, Cate.. I had read this online as well, and while every bit of media attention given to the dog slaughter going on in China is IMPERATIVE, I was disappointed when I read: " The SPA does not set itself up as a judge of a country and its culture, but is asking for animals to be killed in a dignified way, " the SPA said. Am I wrong here? Shouldn't they be condemning the killing of the dogs AT ALL for consumption or for " products " (fur, etc)? Did anyone else feel this way when they read this? ~Kim voices4animals.com aapn , Cate <cateanna> wrote: > > Lunar New Year: French animal lovers howl at Chinese > dog slaughter > Fri Jan 27 > > PARIS (AFP) - France's Society for the Protection of > Animals (SPA) appealed to Chinese President Hu Jintao > to put an end to the cruel slaughter of dogs, which it > blasted as an affront. > > " The SPA does not set itself up as a judge of a > country and its culture, but is asking for animals to > be killed in a dignified way, " the SPA said. > > " Millions of dogs (in China) are hanged, beaten with > sticks and butchered while they are still alive, " it > said in a press release. > > The organisation added that it had tried to get French > media to accept an advertisement as part of its > campaign against dog butchering, but the picture -- of > an animal being cut to pieces in a pool of blood -- > was so graphic that it had been rejected by every > newspaper. > > The upcoming Chinese New Year on Sunday ushers in the > Year of the Dog. > > Up to 10 million dogs are slaughtered every year in > China, many killed slowly and cruelly to supposedly > enhance the meat's flavour, according to animal rights > groups. > > http://news./s/afp/20060127/lf_afp/afplifestylechinalunar_06 0127182821 > > -------------- > > THE FOLLOWING IS A MACHINE TRANSLATION > > Societe Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) site: > > Année du chien : la SPA demande au Président chinois > d'intervenir! > [Year of the dog: the SPA requires of the Chinese > President to intervene!] > > With the day before of Chinese New Year's day (year of > the dog), the SPA wished to carry out a posting > campaign on the conditions of demolition of the dogs > in China. Guest guest
Hi Kim and AAPN'ers (to steal Barbara's term!), yes agree and we're putting a letter together for the SPA which outlines our belief why there is, and can never be, a " dignified " slaughter of dogs and cats. It'll be long, but brings in the arguments and introduces progress and hope in China too.....will send over soon, cheers, Jill.
