Guest guest
What animals died? Earth worms or primates or birds or amoebas? 104 animal deaths seems a lot, no matter what the species ... clearly there's more to this story??? All the more reason to question/wonder about zoos or governments sending animals - like gorillas! - to non-EEP/SSP zoos in the name of " cultural exchanges " or " gifts! " .... Thai media say lack of expertise on animal welfare among the Chiang Mai Zoo staff, lead to the 21 species losing at least a member each. Thai civic groups have now demanded investigations into the deaths, as well as reports that the multi-billion-shilling project has triggered illegal trade in wild animals. They were expected to submit their demand to the government yesterday during a cabinet meeting held at the night safari park. It was chaired by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is promoting the project in his home village, despite protests at the transfer of the animals from Kenya and other parts of the world. The zoo was originally planned to open last April, but the date was postponed several times because of the protests. Conservationists in Kenya went to court and obtained an injunction barring the Government from going ahead with the exports. But Thai authorities have vowed to push on with the project despite the protests. Its embassy in Nairobi said there was no official communication from Thailand regarding the deaths. A personal assistant of the ambassador, Mr Hedwig Nyalwal, declined to discuss the matter. Reactions in Kenya were, however, swift. Conservationists said it would be incredible for Kenya to insist on sending its animals to a " zoo of death " .
