Guest guest
Mumbai zoo tragedy: 11 deer die in stampede TIMES NEWS NETWORK February 13,2006 Mumbai: In yet another tragic zoo tale, 11 deer were killed on Sunday night in the city zoo due to a stampede inside an enclosure that housed 25 black bucks. The incident took place within two months of a warning from the Central Zoo Authority that the deer population at Veer Jijamata Bhosle Udyan needed to be curtailed in view of overcrowding. Municipal officials said the stampede may have taken place after some dogs entered the meshed enclosure. Other sources said the high-decibel noise from a heavy-duty earth-remover near the cage could have fatally triggered panic among the animals. These deaths are the latest in a series of tragedies that have occurred at the Udyan over the last three years. Among the casualties in the recent past have been 22 deer, an elephant and a crocodile. Of the 11 deer killed in the latest incident, 10 are male black bucks while one was a male fourhorned deer. Municipal commissioner Johny Joseph, who visited the Byculla zoo on Monday evening, said the preliminary postmortem report suggested the deer died due to shock and internal bleeding in the stampede as the animals repeatedly crashed their heads against the wire mesh of the enclosure. For a detailed post-mortem, their viscera are being sent to Pune. In all, there are 75 black bucks in the zoo. Officials had recently castrated 25 male black bucks.
