Guest guest
Saturday February 25, 2006 - The Star Perak bans import of pigs IPOH: Perak has banned the import of pigs from other states with immediate effect to safeguard against the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). State Health, Science, Innovation, Technology and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Tan Chin Meng said the order was issued following the discovery of FMD-infected pigs from Penang at a slaughterhouse here. " The move is expected to cause a shortage in the supply of pork in the state but is nevertheless necessary to curb the spread of the disease, " he said yesterday. On Thursday, 130 pigs from Penang were culled after they were tested positive for the disease by the Perak Veterinary Services Department. The department found lesions on the feet of the animals while monitoring them at the slaughterhouse in Menglembu here. " Consumers can be rest assured that pork sold in the state is safe for consumption as the department carries out stringent monitoring for diseases, " Tan said. " It is standard practice for pigs brought to the state's two slaughterhouses in Menglembu and Taiping to be tested before they are slaughtered. " Health officials, he said, carried out checks on meat sold at markets. Also, the 154 pig farms in the state will continue to be monitored closely. On bird flu, Tan said there had been no case in the state so far.
