Guest guest
The Sentinel, Guwahati, Tuesday 28 February, 2006 (Web edition not avaiable) Golden langoor toll in BTAD rises to 14 From our correspondent. Kokrajhar: Feb 27. The death toll of Golden langoors, one of the most endangered species of primates, purportedly due to a ` mysterious disease' in the reserve forests of Chirang and Ripu and Sikri Sikla wildlife sanctuary has gone up to 14. The forest department is learnt to have sent the carcasses for forensic tests. Expressing concern over the dwindling population in the BTC forest reserves, Bablu Dey of Green Heart Nature Club, an NGO, underscored the need to detect the " disease " which has posed a threat to the primates. He said that the NGO has approached the Wildlife Trust of India with a proposal for a joint venture, but the plan is yet to materialize. Indicating that poaching activities and human interference is still on in the forest cover of the region, they called for strict control over such illegal activities.
