CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

Lok Sabha

Monitoring of the implementation of the existing laws

on prevention of cruelty to animals is done by Central

Government through Animal Welfare Board of India

(AWBI) as well as by State Governments. The existing

laws cover various aspects relating to prevention of

cruelty to animals comprehensively.

The Government receives requests from time to time

regarding different aspects of laws relating to

prevention of cruelty to animals. On the basis of

feedback received from various quarters, necessary

action is taken. A consultative group was constituted

by the Ministry which comprised of representatives

from both Government and Non-Government sectors,

representing the interests of pharmaceutical sector as

well as of the animal welfare sector. The groupfs

report has been finalized unanimously which is to form

the basis for streamlining the existing Rules and

Regulations regarding using animals in scientific

experiments. Notification containing the Draft of

Breeding of and Experiment on Animals (Control &

Supervision) Amendment Rules, 2005 have already been

published in the Gazette of India inviting suggestions

or objections from the persons likely to be affected

thereby.

This information was given by Minister of State for

Environment & Forests, Shri Namo Narain Meena in his

written reply to a question of Shri Adhir Chowdhury in

the Lok Sabha today.
