They suspect encroachers, believed to be from a neighbouring country, have been using the elephants to scare people away while they scouted for gaharu engkaras trees in the jungle. The core of the tree is used to make joss sticks, giving it its distinctive fragrance, and is believed to fetch a good price. He said the villagers also found cut branches of the gaharu engkaras tree lying around the forest. " We discovered this when we were helping some officers from the Wildlife and National Parks and the Forestry Departments track down an elephant which had ventured into the village in January, " he said. Another villager Mat Zani Ramli, 44, said he was tapping rubber at about 8.30am on Monday when he spotted an elephant walking through the rubber plantation. The elephant had wandered close to the village and ravaged the banana trees grown by the villagers, he said. Kedah Forestry director Wan Yusoff Wan Ahmad said he would investigate the villagers' allegations.
