Guest guest
Annual health checks are unnecessary - New Straits Times CHAN WENG WOH President Malaysian Kennel Association March 23 -- SOME veterinarians have proposed that the Housing and Local Government Ministry make it compulsory for dog owners to obtain an annual canine certificate of health when applying for a dog licence. The Malaysian Kennel Association strongly objects to this proposal because. • It is unprofessional, unethical and there is a direct conflict of interest as it will benefit the proposers financially. • The law will give the power to a vet to decide whether an owner can be given a licence. • A mere physical examination will not allow any vet to certify that a dog is fit. A more detailed examination involving blood tests, urine and stool examination, and even X-rays, ultrasound and a CT scan may be necessary. This will cost several hundred ringgit. • A vet may want an illness to be treated before issuing the certificate, causing the owner to incur more expenses. • The law will be discriminatory as it targets only dogs. • There is no scientific evidence that taking a dog for this physical examination is of any benefit to the dog. • There is no evidence that annual vaccination of dogs is necessary. There is scientific evidence that if a dog is vaccinated when it is young, there is no need for annual boosters. On the other hand, too much vaccination is detrimental. • The proposed law is unconstitutional as it compels a dog owner to take his healthy dog to the vet every year. No other country has this rule. We urge all local councils to ignore these proposals.
