Guest guest
Thursday March 30, 2006 - The Star Concerted effort needed to preserve the ikan kelah KUALA LUMPUR: A full ecosystem approach is vital for the survival of the ikan kelah (mahseer) whose numbers have dwindled due to river pollution, according to Environment and Natural Resources Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Sazmi Miah. Under this approach, there should be integrated management of land, water and life resources, besides conservation efforts, he said. He called on managers of river, land and life resources to cooperate and come to a consensus on managing the mahseer species. " To manage wild mahseer means managing a clean river system. This is a big challenge that requires integration of various agencies with different, and sometimes conflicting objectives, " he said when opening an international symposium on the fish yesterday. At present, there are two mahseer breeding centres – at Sungai Tarak, Sirian, in Sarawak and at Sungai Tahan in Taman Negara, Pahang. The fish, which can weigh more than 50kg at maturity, has a lifespan of between 40 years and 50 years. Mahseer, which has good export potential can fetch about RM500 a kg.
