Red River Zoo gets baby Sichuan takin

Associated Press

FARGO, N.D. - The Red River Zoo's newest resident is considered a

national treasure by the Chinese government.

The baby Sichuan takin was born March 31. It is named Quanli, which in

Mandarin Chinese means " with all one's strength. "

Takins are an endangered species found in the mountains of the Sichuan

province of China. They are commonly found in elevations as high as

16,000 feet.

Their diet mainly consists of apples, carrots, hay, tree limbs and

branches, said Mike Schmidt, the zoo's animal collection manager.

Quanli weighs about 20 pounds. Males can grow to be 1,000 pounds, zoo

Executive Director Paula Grimestad said.

North America has only 43 Sichuan takin in 11 zoos, Grimestad said.

Quanli's mother and father are on breeding loan from the San Diego

Zoo, and Quanli is the first takin the Red River Zoo owns.

After about two years, Quanli will leave the zoo to be paired with a

female takin.
