Guest guest
*85 parrots rescued from a pet shop* Monday, 17 April 2006 People for Animals members, Manoj Oswal and Dhiraj Jain along with Rahul Patil, a volunteer from PETA India rescued several parakeets from a pet shop " Bombay Frame House " . We had some information that this shop has been selling parrots illegally. Parrots (or parakeets) are protected under various Schedules of the Wild Life protection action 1972, mostly under Schedule IV. Our volunteers posing as customers visited the pet shops and ordered for a parrot and it was readily sold to us. Immediately, we contacted the Forest Officer Sri Kadu and Smt Maneka Gandhi. Mrs Gandhi personally co-ordinated the whole operation from New Delhi. Calling us and the officers several times till a team of 5 officers could be arranged. We bought yet another parrot and instantly the officers raided the premises. We were hoping to rescue a few parrots, but inside we found a full factory like atmosphere where these birds where being raised illegally, there were 68 parrots stuffed in a single cage and 16 others in other cages. One more was confiscated from the home of the owner. Totalling 85 parakeets in total. They were stuffed in suffocating hot rooms in a old chawl without any form of air circulation or ventilation. The whole process of confiscation and filing of reports was completed by 11 p.m on Sunday evening. The birds will be freed or rehabilitated depending on their state of health and capability to survive in the wild. A FIR has been registered by the Forest Office. There are indications that this is a second offence by this person and the offence will not be compounded and a due cognizance will be taken. The chief conservator of forest would like to advise all people that buying and selling of parrots is illegal and all those who have bought the parrots to contact the forest office to surrender them. -- Signature : You laugh at me beacause I am different but I laugh at you because you are all same.
