New species of parrot, mouse found in Philippine island

MANILA (AFP) - New species of parrot and mouse have been identified by a

team of scientists in the forested mountains of Camiguin island in the

Philippines, one of the researchers said.

The new species, found only on the volcanic island some 700 kilometers (434

miles) south of Manila, will be officially unveiled in the latest issue of

Fieldiana: Zoology, the scientific journal of the Chicago-based Field Museum

of Natural History, said Filipino researcher Blas Tabranza.

Tabranza, who was with the Mindanao State University at the time of the

expedition, said that the parrot, known as the Camiguin Hanging Parrot or

Loriculus camiguinensis and the mouse, known as Apomys camiguinensis, were

first found in a field study of the area conducted from 1994-1995.

It was only years later, after samples of these newly-discovered animals

were compared to known species that the Field Museum concluded that they

were so far unknown, said Tabranza, who has since left the state university

to join the local environmental group Haribon Foundation.

He said as many as 14 other potential new species, found in different parts

of the Philippines, are still being checked by scientists to see if they

have ever been identified before.

Tabranza said that the blue and red parrot and the rusty-brown mouse of

Camiguin remained hidden for so long because they were found only in the

higher elevations of the mountains and were nocturnal.

He warned that the forests were the only habitat in which these rare animals

could survive. Although the forests in Camiguin island have been declared as

protected areas, they are still menaced by illegal loggers.
