Guest guest
Link: www.assamtribune.com Erosion posing threat to Kaziranga wildlife From Our Correspondent GOLAGHAT, April 22 – The world famous one-horned rhino of Kaziranga National Park has been facing a great threat due to heavy erosion created by the Brahmaputra. The negligence of the State government may lead to the submergence of KNP at any moment, the people of the area have alleged. The animal habitat of the park would be thoroughly submerged by the Brahmaputra, they felt. The KNP with 430 square kilometres of land is gradually being eroded by the Brahmaputra. It may be mentioned that 40 square km land has already been submerged by the water of Brahmaputra. From 1967 to 1988, at least 38 square km land has been eroded and another 3 square km land was submerged in 1988. In fact, after the earthquake of 1988 when the Brahmaputra had changed its course, the erosion of KNP began. From 1988 to 1996, at least two forest camps have been destroyed by the erosion. The forest camps namely the New Gavarai, the Naste, the Debeswari have been destroyed by the erosion. The river has also created great trouble on the Kohora, Bagori and Burapahar forest reserve. Recently, the erosion created trouble in Agartoli forest reserve and Maklung forest camp. The newly constructed guest house in Arimora Development Block also would be submerged soon. The areas under the Mahpora, Hatipora, Kartika, Natun Gavarai, Aluri have already been submerged in Brahmaputra. There are no forest camps in Baghetapo, Lungpur Tapu, Korney Tapu. The conscious people have demanded to protect and preserve the flora and fauna of the KNP and to take proper steps against the heavy erosion.
