ABC KANDY UPDATE 28.4.2006

Today we had another date in courts to safeguard the life of the community-dogs

in Kandy. After 8 months today finally the charge was supposed to be read out by

the Judge, but to prevent it, the KMC lawyer suddenly said, that, since a new

Mayor had been elected last week, we should try to come to a settlement outside

courts. The Judge glanced at us to see whether we have any objection, but we

thought it's good and did not object. So he gave us six weeks time to work out

an agreement with the new Head of Town. When we discussed it with our lawyers,

we decided to go to meet the Mayor prepared with a Memorandum of Understanding

to be signed by both parties. Since they want to evade the charge, they are

likely to agree. In this memorandum it will be assured, that no sterilized and

vaccinated dog will be killed and if there is any complaint about a dog, which

has not yet been neutered and vaccinated, it must be caught and given to us, so

that we can spay and vaccinate and then release it back to its territory.

Another good news: even in the surroundings of Kandy dogs are safe now because

the local authority has decided, not to kill dogs anymore, but to straightaway

bring them to us to be sterilized instead of killing them, as they did before.

One problem however we are still facing: Last three months we had to pay for

more than 300 sterilizations per month and now with the provincial council dogs

being brought to us also, we will have to find funds for more than 400 every

month. We have a few friends in various countries, who help us to get the work

done and also few Sri Lankans, but we are still short of funds. If anyone can

help us or has a suggestion how to raise funds, please contact us:
