Register Now for Early, Discounted Registration! -------- The Strength of Many The animal rights movement has achieved momentous moral and practical victories in the last two decades. The voices of its supporters have grown from anguished cries to shouts of triumph as we have realized innumerable successes year after year. Animal protection advocates have raised the collective consciousness of the entire nation regarding the use and abuse of animals in all segments of society. Our social justice struggle has much in common with those that have come before. American history has proven time and again that although human beings are capable of inflicting unspeakable atrocities on members of our own and other species, we are likewise capable of righting our wrongs. As Tom Regan so eloquently states in his book, Empty Cages: Our faith in a better world is deeply rooted in history. There was a time when many thought it was utopian, unrealistic and hopeless to achieve equal rights for Native Americans, African Americans, women, the mentally challenged or the physically disabled.. Nevertheless, the verdicts of history teach that entrenched social practices not only can change, they have changed. But never without a struggle. -------- Keynote speaker Jeffrey Masson Jeffrey Masson, the internationally acclaimed author of When Elephants Weep and other books about animal emotions, is our Saturday evening keynote speaker. Jeffrey will be making a rare U.S. appearance. Matthew Scully, author of Dominion, says Masson's latest book, Raising the Peaceable Kingdom, is a wise and charming parable of human kindness, goodwill, and fellowship with other creatures. Only Jeffrey Masson would actually carry out the project described here, and only he could tell the story with such humor, insight, and beautiful writing. Farm Sanctuary generously sponsors Jeffrey Masson at The Strength of Many. Read more about Jeffrey Masson! -------- Keynote Speaker Dan Piraro Dan Piraro, creator of the award-winning, pro-animal, syndicated comic strip, Bizarro, will be our Friday evening keynote speaker. The New York Times describes his one-man show, " The Bizarro Bologna Show, " as " a shrewd tour of a cartoonist's imagination. It is silly and, as it should be, wildly applauded. " The Humane Society of the United States generously sponsors Dan Piraro at The Strength of Many. Take a Trip to Bizarro! -------- The Strength of Many Program Our expert speakers will focus on those animals who are most like us - nonhuman primates - and those who are most abused - poultry. We will learn from Sarah Baeckler, primatologist; Theo Capaldo, NEAVS; Karen Davis, UPC; Mia MacDonald, Worldwatch Institute; Erica Meier, COK; Miyun Park, HSUS; Bruce Wagman, ALDF attorney; and Paul Waldau, Tufts University. Christine Chavez Delgado and Julie Chavez Rodriguez - granddaughters of vegan farm labor activist Cesar Chavez - will discuss Latino issues as they relate to animal protection. Christine works for United Farm Workers and is a current candidate for the California State Assembly, and Julie works for the Cesar Chavez Foundation. We will also deepen our understanding of the animal protection movement with scholar Bart Gruzalski - an expert in nonviolence - and historian Diane Beers, who will explore the animal protection movement's past. Completing the line-up will be CAF's Tom Regan and ASI's Kim W. Stallwood. The Strength of Many is also made possible by the generous support of Lantern Books, The Animals Voice, VegNews Magazine and the Doris Day Animal League.
