Guest guest
Dear Friends, 10 days ago we informed you about our last date in courts and we were very confident, that the proposed settlement will come true very soon and once and for all the dogs will be safe. At first we wanted to make an appointment with the new Mayor immediately, but our lawyer said, that we should wait for them to approach us because they had asked for the settlement. In the meantime we have a doubt, whether they are seriosly intrested in a settlement or whether they just want to win time. What they hope to achieve by a further delay I'm not sure. Two days ago our new President has made a statement, asking the local authorities not to kill dogs. Sometimes such statement are not very reliable, but if they will be followed up by actual steps, change of laws and allocation of funds for humane alternatives, this is a real step forward, this time not only for Kandy, but for the whole island. However we are getting our draft for a MOU ready and hope that we can find the funds to continue our programme and stabilise the dog-population in Kandy. We are grateful for every contribution. Guest guest
Dear Friends, Let us hope that this satement by the new President is followed up by legislative change. We were all expecting this a year ago when the Health Minister announced at a press conference at Colombo that new laws would be brought in but nothing has happened so far. All concerned about the dogs must get together and make a unified demand to see that Sri Lanka finally stops the killing of dogs in a useless effort to control street dog numbers and rabies. Only an aggressive spay-vaccinate-and-return programme can do this. Best of luck with your campaign. S.
