G. Debarmma, Director of the Zoo, said, " The birth of such species in captivity is a rare phenomena and it happens only when the species gets conducive environment in captivity. " Breeding of hornbill and clouded leopard in captivity is a rare incident in the country and both of them are identified as 'red- listed' species in India, Debarmma claimed. He said eight endangered species including three spectacular monkeys belonging to Schedule- 1 of Wildlife Protection Act have given birth in the captive environment of Sipahijala in last two months. And three other clouded leopards and two rare species of wildcat-- belioeved to be on the verge of extinction---are now at advance stage and going to give birth to its young ones next week, Debarmma added. P.
