9MP allocation for reforestation in states

*KUANTAN:* Allocations will be given to state governments that are willing

to carry out reforestation.

Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said

an allocation had been set aside under the Ninth Malaysia Plan for the

purpose.

He said Sabah and Sarawak had already started the project, whereas it was

the second time he had met up with the Pahang government on the subject.

" We need the support and approval of the state governments as the programmes

are to be implemented on state land, " he told reporters after attending a

closed-door meeting with the state government at a leading hotel here

yesterday.

He also said the ministry was on an aggressive campaign to get all state

governments involved in a reforestation programme to ensure there was

constant supply of timber for the industry.

Chin said the timber industry's yearly requirement was about two million

cubic metres, and Pahang alone contributed 1.8 million cubic metres.

After the meeting, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the state had

agreed in principle to carry out the replanting project and that state

agency Amanah Saham Pahang or one of its subsidiaries would manage it.

" Individuals can either work together with the state agency or take part at

a later stage, " he added.
