Plant & Animals Welfare Society , better known as PAWS has recently been certified for its 'OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE SOCIETY' by Karmayog website which dedicates itself to highlighting issues relating to environment , health, education ,social service and civic reform. Paws which is so far the only NGO in Animal Welfare to have received this award, was picked out of many such groups working on similar lines, due to the dedication of its young team, most of whom are between 20 to 30 years. They have recently been featured in the'Limca Book of Records 2005' as India's youngest Animal Rehabiliatation Team. Started by Nilesh Bhanage in January 2001, it initially treated stray dogs with maggot wounds and looked after abandoned and injured animals. As it grew in strength, the group acquired a mobile ambulance which started sterilizations and medical care of stray and suffering animals in Thane District. Soon young volunteers from neighbouring cities joined the rescue mission and its range and strength grew to include more volunteers and larger projects. Run largely through donations given by large hearted animal lovers, PAWS conducts several activities for the welfare of animals like spot first aid, rescue & rehabilitation of Wildlife, cattle health & vaccination camps, adoptions and sterlisations of Stray animals etc. PAWS has also helped over 600 animals during its flood relief operations in July 2005. With two ambulances, 40 volunteers and two staff members and being in possession of an entire animal rescue gear and medical kit, PAWS works tirelessly under the leadership of young Mr. Nilesh Bhanage & Ms. Anuradha Ramaswami.
